Guidelines for Selecting Throw Pillows

By: Steinhafels Designer Michelle Kahl

The best way to add style and comfort to your living room is with decorative accent pillows! They’re also a great way to add texture, color, and different patterns to your space. Are you someone that likes to change up your decor, or add seasonal decor throughout the year? Throw pillows are an inexpensive way to be able to change that up! But how many pillows should you have on your furniture? And how do you mix different patterns?

Chair: 1 Pillow (standard or kidney)

Loveseat: 2 Pillows

Standard Sofa: 4 Pillows

Large Sofa: 5 Pillows

Sectional (depends on the size): 7 Pillows

Examples below are all designed by Steinhafels Designer Michelle Kahl

Most Steinhafels upholstery pieces on the floor come with a certain amount of pillows… if that’s not enough for you, many of our manufacturers allow us to order additional pillows as well!

Now… how do you mix those patterns? When you are mixing patterns look for these types of things:

  • Movement (this is typically a larger pattern)

  • Geometric Pattern

  • Small Scale Pattern

  • Solid

  • Texture

Any of these combinations will typically always work together! Pull out colors from your main inspiration pattern to create more of a cohesive look.

Here’s an example from our King Hickory Manufacturer!
